Why I love the word Gutsy

Gutsy- Why should you love this word?I have been really excited lately about starting coaching school and getting my website and blog off the ground. I have been working on finding my voice, or to be more specific; who I am and who I want to help. I know that I am a motivator, who is driven, direct, and sometimes a bit of a hard-ass-wont-take-no-nonsense type of person. I want to be direct and to the point. I want my clients to appreciate and even look to me for that, no coddling here. I have been trying to find a word for the type of woman I want to work with, for the type of person I am and strive to be, and for the type of person I can help women to become.

I love the word Badass!

It denotes a sense of self-admiration, motivation, and go-get-it-ness that I love. I also love, love, love all of Jen Sincero’s books and work. She is part of the reason I became a coach, and while I feel that word resonates with me and my potential clients, I feel it is her word.

Today I was struggling with finding a word similar to badass. A word that conveys all of those lovely qualities I mentioned above and more. I typed in

badass synonyms

in to my search bar and got a wide range of words that really surprised me!

The general thesaurus failed me with words like:

  • Agitator
  • rebel
  • demagogue (eew no thank you!),
  • dissident
  • renegade
  • hard-ass
  • bully
  • intimidator (uhg are we describing a criminal here?)

But then I found powerthesaurus.org and the words were definitely more what I was looking for:

  • hard-core
  • risk-taker
  • tough
  • kick-ass
  • awesome
  • cool
  • fearless
  • amazing
  • amazeballs (!)
  • mighty
  • wonderful
  • extraordinary
  • mind-blowing
  • first rate (very British)
  • stentorious (?)
  • leathery (hahaha)
  • groovy
  • astounding
  • awe-inspiring
  • staggering
  • magnificent
  • formidable
  • out of this world
  • and my favorite: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious

While this second list of words was much more fun and closer to the mark (I mean who wouldn’t want to work with an extraordinary, mind-blowing, first rate type of gal?) but none of the words individually could really sum up all of the qualities I am looking for in myself and in my clients. I was left to ponder…

I hopped in my car for a quick run to the gas station and I had NPR on (of course) and Terri Gross (love her!) was interviewing Hilary and Chelsea Clinton about their new book. I didn’t catch the first part of the interview but they were talking about women who had inspired them with their tenacity and perseverance in the face of adversity. I thought to myself- those are my kind of women! I need to read this book, and guess what the book is called?

The Book of Gutsy Women

And there it was…in my face (or in my ears…this was the radio after all) The word I had been looking for-

Gutsy- That is me, that is us, that is who we want to be.

I immediately went on amazon and bought the book and I am eagerly awaiting my 2-day shipping. On the book page was a video of Hilary and Chelsea where they explain what Gutsy means to them. I love these definitions:

Having a clear sense of purpose and having the perseverance and the refusal to give up

Chelsea Clinton

Gutsy women to us are women who faced obstacles and kept going, they could see what a difference it might make in their own lives and more broadly…striving to achieve but also to pave the way for others behind them

Hillary Clinton

Damn girls, that is it! What I had been looking for, the word, my word, this is my word for my blog, my business, my new chapter in life-

Gutsy

It is gutsy to live a life on purpose! It is gutsy to admit that you are not living your purpose, and it is gutsy to make the necessary changes to have and live that purpose…join me…be gutsy…live a life on purpose!

What do you think it means to be Gusty? Does this word resonate with you?
